Date Night: Cake Decorating

by Jennifer Good

Date Night: Cake Decorating
Set the stage for unforgettable romance with a date night that speaks to your partner's stomach and heart. Date nights have always been a great opportunity to share quality time together. Instead of dinner and a movie, however, why not try something different? Cake decorating can be a fun, unique twist from the norm. It's a cheap and entertaining way to spend the night together, and you'll create memories that will last a lifetime. Even better, heat things up by feeding each other your creation after a romantic dinner for two!

What You'll Need:
Aprons
Cake (see getting started)
Frosting
Cake Toppings (sprinkles, sugar crystals, candy, etc.)
Plastic spatulas for applying the frosting

Getting Started:
Decide whether you want to bake a cake together, buy a pre-made (undecorated) cake at the store, or make one before your date arrives. This will determine what additional supplies and ingredients you'll need and how much time you should set aside for your date night. If you decide to bake the cake at home, try a new cake mix. If you really want to spice things up, use one of these delicious cake mix recipes ideas:

Decorating The Cake:
Most of the fun involved with cake decorating is in the toppings you've selected. If you've picked things that are special to each of you, you're bound to add another element of excitement to the night. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Crushed Candy Pieces/Minature Candies
Get both of your favorite candies. If it would be too large to place on the cake as is, crush or break it into smaller pieces and layer it on top of the frosting as desired. Larger miniature candies can be placed decoratively on whipped cream as well.

Strawberries
Sliced in half, you can layer an entire cake with strawberries! Thin slices are perfect as a filling, and whole strawberries can be placed decoratively on whipped cream. Make it even more decadent by using chocolate covered strawberries!

Piping or Decorating Gels
Gels are great for writing messages or drawing designs on your cake. You can even go as far as creating a stained glass effect using only gel.

Alternative Idea
Instead of tackling a whole cake, try cupcakes instead. Most cake mixes and recipes are easily adapted for cupcakes and you can have more fun decorating these smaller cakes in different themes.
