Rebuilding Self-Esteem After Divorce
A method for finding your self-worth again...

Rebuilding Self-Esteem After Divorce

It's not just the divorce that dents your self-esteem but the months or even years of a failing marriage that lead up to divorce. Now that the legalities are behind you, start thinking about you. Like the Phoenix, you can burst from ashes into a beautiful bird. And isn't it about time?

Take a hint from the Unsinkable Molly Brown, who sang, "I mean much more to me than I mean to anybody else." That's not as selfish as it sounds. Rebuild your self-esteem and you're worth more to everyone who loves you - and everyone you love.

Make yourself your number one project. If nothing else, you'll enjoy the attention.

Rebuilding self-esteem after divorce; what's worked for us:

  • Write down everything you like about yourself.

  • Write down things you'd like to change (and can) and work down the list.

  • Listen for compliments - and believe them.

  • Pamper yourself with new clothes, a massage, a walk by the water.

  • Join a divorce support or single parent group.

  • Seek out people who make you feel good about yourself.

  • Avoid the critical types.

  • Figure out some things you do well and do them often.

  • Stretch - learn some new skill, try a new hobby, enjoy.

  • Don't be afraid to use the pronoun "I" and have it say what you feel.

  • Accomplish something every day.

  • Treat yourself with respect. You've earned it.
