The answer seems simple enough. You just need to get in contact with him. If your friend is already talking to him, find out through them how to get in contact with him. You were friends before, and you both seem to have some sort of interest in each other, so you shouldn't encounter any problems renewing the friendship. I'd be patient and see how things go before considering pursuing anything more romantic. Three years is a long time and people have a way of changing. You may want to be with the person you remembered, and he may be different now. Give the friendship a chance first. If things go well, then you can reconsider the romantic aspect of the relationship.
