What Do You Do When You Feel Everyone Is Against Your Relationship? by Jennifer M. Good
Most people have an opinion on everything. To most people a thing or action is either good or bad. Many times it is based on fact, and many times it is based on a bad experience. When you find yourself in a situation of judgement from another person, you need to know how to be able to tell whether this person's opinion is of value to you.
The first way to do this is to decide exactly how you feel about the situation. Create a pro's and con's list, and decide once and for all your opinion on the matter. This will give you a solid base to draw from when the going gets tough.
When you are confronted by someone who doesn't agree with what you are doing, and you know what you are doing is right for you, don't get upset. Instead, evaluate where their viewpoint is coming from. If you can understand that, it is easier to deal with their objection. Ask yourself, Could they be speaking from their own fears about life? Did something horrible happen to them? Are they lacking in data about the situation? Maybe they have a different viewpoint about life than you do? In the case of online relationships, there can be many reasons for someone to be against it. Fear of something happening to you, fear of you getting hurt emotionally and lack of comprehension on how someone can have strong feelings for someone they've never met in person are just a few of these. Find out what the person's reasons are and try to handle them.
The next step is to realize that it you feel comfortable with something, and you know it is right for you, than it doesn't matter what anyone else says or thinks. They can think that all oranges are pink, and if you know they are orange, it doesn't really matter what color they think they are -- unless you want them to see that the oranges are the way you see them. This is where most problems come about. Each person wants the other to see the other person's point-of-view. If you know you are doing what you want and it is best for you at that moment, you won't feel the need to change the person's viewpoint. Instead, you'll find yourself acknowledging it and moving on with the more positive aspects of your life.
Not everyone will understand, and not everyone will support you. When it comes to online relationships you may realize that many people won't understand and many people won't support you. This is the true test of your own strength, your partner's and your relationship. Following these steps will just help make it a little bit easier.
