Celebrity chef (and undeniable beauty) Giada De Laurentiis is cooking up something new -- and it doesn't even involve her kitchen! De Laurentiis, a Food Network mega star, has partnered with Clairol Natural Instincts as their new celebrity ambassador. In her very first beauty partnership, the chef, cookbook author and lifestyle expert will show off her healthy, radiant looking hair color in the brand’s campaign starting this July.
We're huge fans of Giada, so when we got the opportunity to interview her, our questions were rather hard to narrow down!
LovingYou: It gets HOT in the kitchen. What beauty tricks do you use to stay looking cool on set?
De Laurentiis: I keep a hairdryer close by to help cool down when it gets too hot on set. I also keep a bottle of Evian misting spray on hand as skin can get really dry in the kitchen with all the cooking. The misting spray helps to keep me looking fresh and dewy. Also, olive oil for my hands after washing them constantly helps to keep them and my cuticles moisturized.
LovingYou: What was the first thing you ever cooked? Did it come out edible?
De Laurentiis: When I was 5 years old, I made pizza. It was edible, although I’m not sure the dough’s thickness was to my family’s liking -- plus I added a LOT of cheese, more than anything else. My mom joked that would be the last time I made pizza! We definitely learned the trick of placing foil under the pizza in the oven after the cheese melted over. So good, but very cheesy!
LovingYou: The latest trendy "it" veggie here in Brooklyn is kale, but every time I try to make it, it comes out tasting burnt! Do you have any tried and true ways of preparing kale that maintain the nutrients -- AND the yum factor?
De Laurentiis: I have the best kale smoothie recipe for you! It’s my breakfast of choice during the summer. Here are the ingredients:
- Half bunch of kale -- stems and center removed, use only the leaves
- Half of a cucumber, peeled/seeded
- 1 red apple
- 1/3 cup of organic apple or juice or a small green juice that you can buy at any grocery store
Combine the ingredients in the Vitamix or whichever blender you have, blend together and of course, enjoy!
I also love kale chips and they’re super easy to make. Take a baking sheet, lay out kale leaves. Sprinkle olive oil and smoked salt all over. Then, pop in the oven at 375 degrees F.
LovingYou: We were so excited to hear about your Clairol Natural Instincts partnership! Do you think DIY hair color is something women are embracing more than ever?
De Laurentiis: I think DIY hair color is something women embrace because it’s expensive to go to salons. At-home hair color is faster, easy, accessible and inexpensive. It’s obtainable no matter where you live. It’s especially great for busy moms that only have an hour at the end of the day to make themselves feel glamorous.
LovingYou: What was the most delicious meal you ever ate? Who made it?
De Laurentiis: The most delicious meal I ever ate was made by my grandfather. It’s called pasta shway-shway, a Neapolitan dish that’s very simple. Take fresh tomatoes, garlic, basil, olive oil, salt and pepper. Mix the ingredients together and let it sit for three to four hours and let the natural juices from the tomatoes come out. Toss with hot little pasta tubes and finish with Parmesan cheese!
