Stay On Track!

Ever notice how the gym is packed after New Year’s? Yep, that’s the New Year's resolution plague, people. So many of us set these lofty weight loss resolutions that we desperately try to keep but toss after a week. If you want your goals to last you through more than January, check out these tips from celebrity trainer Michelle Lovitt. We grilled this fitness expert on everything fitness resolution-related, and we’re sharing the details!

Keep your new years weight resolutions

SheKnows: What's a realistic health or weight loss goal that people can make for the upcoming year and actually keep?

Lovitt: “A realistic goal people can set for themselves is getting out and moving at least 15-20 minutes a day at a moderate pace. People tend to set unrealistic expectations of losing 10 pounds or going to the gym every day, and when they don’t see immediate results, they give up. Just putting on your shoes and moving on a consistent basis will help people from abandoning their overall goal of becoming more fit.”

SheKnows: Weight loss isn’t all about the actual physical activity, so tell us, what are some of your must-have weight loss tools to keep you looking and feeling fit?

Lovitt:

  1. Garmin heart rate monitor- 610 FORERUNNER is my favorite: “If your goal is to lose body fat, it is essential to have a heart rate monitor so that you stay in a ‘fat burning zone’ the entire workout. A Garmin heart rate monitor tells you calories burned and which zone you're in (fat burning or glycogen burning). It is essential for outdoor workouts because it has GPS which tracks time, distance, location, calories burned all based on your body’s parameters.
  2. Asics running shoes: "What can I say? They are the best investment you will make in a running shoe. The technology that has gone into the development of the ideal running shoe is something Asics has perfected over any other running shoe and continues to win awards every year."
  3. ACTIVATE water: "If you are exercising to burn fat, be sure to consume at least 64 ounces of water per day, plus an additional 16 ounces for every hour of moderate-intensity activity. Fat is excreted primarily through urine, sweat and carbon dioxide when released in the air from your lungs. If dehydrated, the body isn’t efficient at excreting the fat from the body. Avoid sugary workout drinks packed with calories and look for a vitamin-enhanced beverage that includes electrolytes and nutrients to replenish your body. ACTIVATE is the perfect drink during and after a workout."
  4. Zobha athletic wear: "The best athletic wear on the market, both for style and function. Wearing this high-quality athletic wear makes you look and feel good, so you cannot wait to work out.
  5. Oakley sunglasses: "When working out outside, it is crucial to protect your eyes from the sun and elements. Oakley sunglasses have a vast array of performance treatments and provide the best protection from the sun or flying objects. They are so light and functional, you forget that you’re wearing sunglasses at all."

SheKnows: What other tips do you have for keeping weight loss resolutions?

Lovitt: “Be consistent with your cardio. Watch the amount of carbohydrates consumed. Limit alcohol intake. Overall, have fun! Exercise is good for you and should be something to look forward to doing. Play with your heart monitor. Put on cute workout clothes and get out there and play!”
